Why We Love Scottish Folds

The Signature Ears. The Sweet Souls. The Gentle, Folded Royals of the Cat World.
If you've ever seen a cat with those irresistibly cute, forward-folded ears and an owlish expression that melts your heart, chances are you've met a Scottish Fold—and there's nothing quite like them.

Breed History

The breed traces back to a farm cat named Susie in 1960s Scotland, who caught the eye of a shepherd named William Ross. Susie’s natural ear fold, caused by a cartilage mutation, became the basis of a careful breeding program that eventually gave rise to the Scottish Fold breed as we know it today. What began as a humble barn cat has now become one of the most beloved and sought-after companion breeds in the world.

Temperament

Scottish Folds are known for being:

Affectionate but not clingy – they love being near their people but are rarely demanding

Quiet and gentle – they have soft voices and mellow attitudes

Playful and curious – they enjoy interactive toys and lounging in weird poses (hello, "Buddha sit")

Great with families – they're typically good with children and other pets

They are often described as the perfect blend of cuddly lap cat and independent observer, making them ideal for homes that want a relaxed yet loving companion.

What Makes Them Special

Folded ears: Caused by a natural genetic mutation that affects cartilage, their ears bend forward, giving them a uniquely sweet and rounded appearance.

Big, expressive eyes: Often paired with a rounded face, these cats look wide-eyed and baby-faced well into adulthood.

Laid-back charm: Scottish Folds are famous for their quirky sleeping positions, love of cozy spaces, and funny postures.

Balanced personality: Not overly energetic, but not couch potatoes either—they’re just right.

Special Considerations

Because the folded-ear trait is a genetic mutation, ethical breeders only breed a folded-eared cat with a straight-eared mate to prevent health issues such as osteochondrodysplasia (a cartilage and bone development condition). All our breeding pairs are DNA-tested and health-screened for this reason.

Other considerations:

Scottish Folds should be gently handled and monitored for signs of stiffness or joint discomfort. Regular vet checkups are essential, especially as they age.

They should never be bred fold-to-fold, as this increases the risk of skeletal issues

We breed for health, not just cuteness—and only to improve the breed.

Grooming & Care

Coat types: Folds can be short- or long-haired (Longhairs are sometimes called Highland Folds)

Brushing: Once a week for short hair, 2–3 times a week for long hair

Eyes & ears: Clean ears gently due to their shape, and wipe eyes occasionally if tearing occurs

Nail trimming: Every 2–3 weeks

Nutrition & play: High-quality diet and moderate daily play keep them healthy and happy

Scottish Folds are more than just a pretty face—they're soulful companions, silly friends, and loyal lap cats. At Slangin Pussy Cats, we honor the breed’s history while carefully nurturing its future.
